In recent years a tremendous spike has been observed in the incidence of Breast and Cervical cancers in both urban and rural areas.
The cancer atlas of India released in 2005 demonstrated that North Goa had one of the highest incidences of breast cancer. A lack of cancer registry the problem may be underreported. India accounts for one fourth of the global incidence of new cases of cervical cancer.
With a population of over a billion people, health care resources are still limited for the rural population. Screening programs are not in place.
